Background: A smartphone is a mobile phone that is based on mobile operating system offering internet access, data storage, email capability and multi-tasking between applications in conjunction with the native cellular functions of voice calling and text messaging. With the advent of this new technology it’s trivial to establish if medical students have access to smartphones and their attitude towards their use prior to their integration within the medical learning field. 

Method: A questionnaire was handed out to be filled by clinical medical at CUHAS-Bugando. Data entry and analysis was done using Epidata version 3.1 and SPSS version 17.0 respectively.  

Results: A total of 241 clinical medical students responded to the questionnaire among whom 75.9% (183/241) owned a smartphone with majority being and Android smartphone, 79.9% (147/183). Most of smartphone owners, 88.4% (163/183), installed and used medical apps. Smartphone use by the clinical medical students was predominantly found to be of great value and attributed by most to strengthen their studies and future patient care practices. 

Conclusion: These study findings show that majority of CUHAS-Bugando clinical medical students own and use smartphones especially in supplementing their medical studies. Medical schools should thereby reckon with incorporating and offering support and smartphone use by medical students.
