Candida species is a fungal commensal and a major colonizer of the human skin, as well as of the gastrointestinal, oral, esophageal and genitourinary tracts. This study was conducted to determine magnitude of Candida carriage state colonizing GIT in cancer patients. Objectives: To determine the prevalence and pattern of Candida species colonizing in gastrointestinal of individual of attending Oncology clinic at Bugando medical centre in Mwanza, Tanzania. Methodology: This was a cross sectional hospital based study that comprised of 111 cancer patients with age above 12 years and all gender groups and various types of malignancies attending BMC-oncology clinic. Oral swab and stool sample were collected and standard mycological tests for Candida isolation and speciation was done, data were recorded in lab log book then entered in Excel which was then transferred and analyzed to STATA version 13 software. Findings: This study shows a total of 111 participant patient with mean age ± standard deviation of 50 ± 15.5. The overall culture positive of oral swab sample 3.60% and stool sample 3.60% with predominance of Candida Tropicalis. Conclusion and Recommendation: The finding of this study shows high prevalence of GIT Candida colonizing among female cancer patient who start chemotherapy, therefore there is a need for clinicians to identify these kind of patients because they will be at more risk of Candidiasis, also more studies should be done to look for association of Candida Tropicalis and Candida infection among cancer patients.
