Background: In Tanzania primary health facilities are relied upon by over 75% of a population for Health care services, however the diagnosis of UTI in these facilities hinges on the detection of Leukocyte esterase with little consideration on its accuracy. Nevertheless, there is limited documentation regarding the effect of time on detection of Leukocyte esterase using dipstick test which might lead to misdiagnosis of UTI. This study aimed at determining the Effect of time on leucocyte esterase levels and the Utility of leucocyte esterase test in detection of UTI among adult symptomatic patients at Igoma Health Center in Mwanza.
Methodology: This hospital based cross section study was conducted at Igoma hospital, Mwanza Tanzania between April and July whereby 5mls of requested from patients and the polythene wide mouthed containers was used for collection. The Rapid Urine dipstick test was used to Leukocyte esterase and Data was analyzed Using Stata version 15.0
Results: A total of 376 participants were enrolled in this study and the majority were female counting 261(69.4%) with the overall average age being 30years. Majority were from Nyamagana district counting 300(79.8%) with majority having primary level of education 187(49.7%) and majority being the married.
Conclusion: The leukocyte esterase levels decrease over time in urine samples retained at room temperature without any preservatives due to leukocyte deteriorations, thus Leukocyte esterase should not be used as diagnostic test and if used it should be performed immediately when the urine sample is received in laboratory post void.
