Abstract:
Background: Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are among the most common congenital malformations. Reported incidences have also increased over time as detection has improved and the distribution of these defects varies over time.
Methods: This hospital based retrospective study of children undewent Echocardiography evaluation at Bugando Medical Center analysed the prevalence and pattern of CHD by using simple descriptive statistics.
Results: Between January 2023 and December 2023, a total of 500 patient received cardiac by using echocardiogrdphy . 304 (60.8%) had CHD and 158 (52%) out of 304 patients with CHD were male. 143 (47%) were diagnosed between 1month and 12 months of age. The commonest isolated CHD was PDA in 74 patients (24.3%) where male was affected by 37.3% and female 62.7% by followed with PFO in 63 patients (20.7%). The most common cyanotic congenital heart disease was tetralogy of fallot (ToF) 12 (3.9%) out of 304 with 66.7% were male and 33.3% were female.
Conclusion: In this study the prevalence CHD has decreased with PDA being the most common followed with PFO and ToF being the most common cyanotic CHD. This difference was due to improvement of detection CHD and sample size taken.
