Summary: Abstract: Introduction: In male adult with diabetes, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction increases with advanced age and longer diabetes duration and is substantially higher in men with type 2 diabetes than those with type 1 diabetes. Diabetic microvascular complications presenting as neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy and macrovascular complications presenting as cardiovascular disease are associated with erectile dysfunction in diabetic men. This study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of erectile dysfunction among male adult with diabetes and determine the associated factors and the uptake of treatments. Objective: To determine the prevalence of erectile dysfunction, associated factors and uptake of treatment among male adult diabetic patients attending diabetic clinic at Bugando medical centre. Methodology: This was a Hospital based analytical cross sectional study was conducted from November 2022 to February 2023. All consenting male diabetic patients age above 18 years who was attended diabetic clinic at Bugando Medical Centre, was serially enrolled. Systematic sampling where one participant was included after every two patients. A total patients of 382 were enrolled in this study. Blood samples was collected in vacuntainer where blood glucose, HbA1C, urea and creatinine, will be analyzed. Results: The study involved 382 patients with the goal of achieving a 100% response rate. The average age of the participants was 59.46 years with a standard deviation of 10.6 years, ranging from 21 to 85 years. The majority of the participants (94.2%) were married. The average score on the International Erectile Function Test (ILEF-5) was 13.86 with a standard deviation of 4.375. The range of scores varied from 5 to 25. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in this study was found to be 70.2 %( n=268). Among those with erectile dysfunction, 137(38.5%) had severe ED, 79(20.2%) had moderate ED, and 42(11.0%) had mild ED. The study also showed that the risk of developing ED is influenced by increasing in age, duration of diabetes, hypertension. Among those who did have ED, 228 participants (59.7%) reported not using any medication to treat their condition, while 41 participants (10.7%) indicated that they were using medication specifically for ED. Conclusion: The study showed that high prevalence of ED, among adult male diabetes patient. And also show that old age, duration of diabetes, and hypertension is strongly associated. Furthermore the study showed that the luck of knowledge. Lack of standard ED treatment guideline explained the low rate of treatment up take. This findings necessitate the need of screening, treatment, and possible prevention of ED in our daily clinic.
