Assessment of the knowledge and perception on youth friendly sexual reproductive health services in Shinyanga rural areas, northern Tanzania.

Abstract:
Background: Promoting healthy practices during adolescence and taking steps for better protection of young people from health risks in critical to the future of countries health. Young people aged 15-24 years account for 60% of the new HIV infection in sub-Sahara Africa. The risk of dying from pregnancy-related causes is much higher for adolescents than for older women. The knowledge on youth friendly sexual reproductive health (SRH) services is poor in most areas in rural settings leading to low utilization of services. The study aim at assessing the knowledge and perceptions on youth sexual reproductive health services in Shinyanga rural areas, northern Tanzania.
Objectives: Main objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and perception of youth friendly sexual reproductive health services in Shinyanga rural areas northern Tanzania with specific objectives of determining youth knowledge on sexual reproductive health, to assess adolescents perception towards SRH services and to assess youth practice towards adolescents SRH services in Shinyanga rural areas northern Tanzania.
Materials and methods: A multi-stage sampling strategy was employed to select the study sample in this cross sectional community based study. Four hundred (400) young people were interviewed. Data were generated using standard questionnaires and analyzed using a computer program SPSS 17.0 software.
Results: The study found out that 262 (65.5%) have heard SRH services, 121 (30.3%) were knowledgeable of SRH services. Majority were aware of HIV transmission 323 (80.8%) and about 263 (65.8%) were knowledgeable on signs and symptoms of STIs. About 134 (33.5%) were found to have knowledge on FP methods. 236 (59%) agreed that health worker should teach SRH education at school. About 93 (23%) have visited health facility for SRH services. majority have heard about HIV/AIDS 338 (97%), however about 156 (39%) have tested for HIV and 83 (20.8%) have tested for other STI apart from HIV.
Conclusion and recommendations: Considering all dimension of this study, young people in Shinyanga district council has a moderate knowledge and awareness on key issues reproductive health services. However the practice of youth towards SRH services is low. Few numbers of youth are getting SRH education at school and there is still a need to improve it. The ministry of health should ensure the availability of SRHS especially in rural areas so as to increase the assess of services by young people.
