Abstract:
Background: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a fungal infection of the female lower genital tract of the vagina and vulva caused by Candida species. It is estimated that 40% of healthy asymptomatic women have Candida as normal flora in the lower genital tract. However, Candida species can become causative agents of Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) also known as candidiasis or Moniliasis. The aim of this study was to determine the species distribution and antifungals susceptibility patterns of different Candida spp. causing Vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, pattern, factors associated with vagina candidiasis among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Methodology: High vaginal swab was collected from 384 pregnant women attending ant-natal clinic at Mnazi Mmoja Referral Hospital in Zanzibar-Tanzania. Wet preparation and gram staining were performed then samples were cultured onto SDA and incubated at 37˚C for 24 hours. Identification of Candida spp. was done by colony characteristics and growth pattern in Canddida Chromo agar. Antifungal susceptibility test was done by broth microdilution method and interpreted as recommended by CLSI. Data was entered into the Microsoft excel sheet for cleaning and coding then it was analyzed by using STATA statistical developer version 15.
Result: A total of 384 pregnant women with median [IQR] age of 28[24-32] years were enrolled in the current study. The overall prevalence of Vulvo-vaginal candidiasis was 42.45%(n=163), The prevalence of Candida species identified was C.albicans 22.14%(n=85) and followed by C.tropicalis 9.64%(n=37), C.glabrata 9.11%(n=35),C.krusei 1.56%(n=6). Candida species in this study showed susceptibility towards Itraconazole and Voriconazole (1)
Conclusion: Among 163 of 384 pregnant women attending Mnazi mmoja clinic have VVC mainly caused by Candida albicans by 22.1%(n=85), susceptibility towards Itraconazole and Voriconazole we recommend screening and treatment of VVC to pregnant women attending Mnazi Mmoja referral hospital Zanzibar Tanzania.
