Abstract:
"Background: The aging of the population leads to an increase in number of elderly patients with chronic diseases, identifying the factors that affect medication compliance is important in improving health among the elderly patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases. Geriatric patients are at the highest possibility of polypharmacy and risk of adverse drugs reactions due to interaction and altered pharmacokinetics, they may have difficulties on complying with the dosage regimens for different reasons.
Broad Objective; Identification of the factors affecting level of compliance and types of compliance issues with the prescription medicines among Geriatric outpatients attending at BMC, Mwanza, Tanzania.
Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted at BMC, Mwanza, Tanzania, Geriatric age group of both genders attending at BMC with a diagnosis of Cardiovascular disease were studied, I enrolled 247 Geriatric outpatients attending clinic at BMC. Patients were directly interviewed and data was collected using a questionnaire.
Results: The study showed that 55.5% of the sample (n= 247) had low Compliance level, this percentage tend to increase as the age increases. Most of the participants has moderate beliefs level 57.5%, only 15.8% of the sample scored high on knowledge level which was significantly associated with Compliance level, of 2.8% participants were found to have high level of memory.
Conclusions: Elderly outpatients attending at BMC had low level of Compliance, most of them did not have enough knowledge about their medications. Patients who scored low level of Compliance tend to pay more visits to clinics.
