Prevalence of common haematological complications resulted from anticancer chemotherapy use among cancer patients at Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Dar es Salaam Tanzania

Abstract:
Background: Cancer is a disease which results from abnormal proliferation of cells. Anticancer drugs have an effect on the specific tumour or specific cells affected in the body, however may affect other cells particularly the most dividing cells , blood being one of the components with a lifespan of 120 days is affected resulting into haematological problems such as anaemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia. The objective of this study was to determine prevalence of common haematological complication resulted from anticancer chemotherapy use.
Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted at Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Dar es Salaam where by data from 384 patient`s files was collected from 17th April to 29th April 2023.A chi square test was conducted to show association between anticancer chemotherapy use and haematological complication.
Results: The common reported haematological complication was anaemia with the prevalence of 44.0%, 75(19.5%) patients developed anaemia and leukopenia, 65(16.9%) had leukopenia, 8(2.1%) patients had thrombocytopenia, 26(6.8%) patients developed both Anaemia and thrombocytosis, 2(0.5%) had anaemia and neutropenia.
Conclusion: The overall prevalence of common haematological complications resulted from anticancer chemotherapy use is 91.1%.Cisplatin being the most drug of concern.
