Abstract:
Background: The use of withdrawn medicine can result into adverse effects due to toxicity from incorrect ingredient, failure to cure disease, contributing to increase of antimicrobial resistance, a loss of confidence in health care programmes and can result into loss of money in purchase that withdrawn medicine.
To make sure that there is proper control of withdrawn medicines both regulatory authority and healthcare workers has to be aware on the way to identify the withdrawn medicine and categories of withdrawn medicine.
Broad objective: was to assess healthcare workers awareness and identification of withdrawn antibiotics drugs at Nyamagana District since Healthcare workers have patients’ well-being and their safety but their safety and efficacy may be compromised by presence of withdrawn medicine.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among healthcare workers through administered questionnaire and a check list.
Results: (36.24%) of healthcare workers manage to identify Amodiaquine tablets as withdrawn medicines and (26.88%) of healthcare workers manage to identify Ketoconazole tablets as withdrawn medicine.
Conclusion: Healthcare workers played important role in patient well-being and their safety. This study aimed in assessing awareness among healthcare workers toward withdrawn medicines but level of awareness toward withdrawn medicines is low among healthcare workers.
