Knowledge and Attitude upon Intrauterine Device Use as a Modern Contraceptive Method among Reproductive Aged Women Attending Kambarage Health Centre.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional quantitative study was used to assess knowledge and attitude concerning use of intrauterine contraceptive device among 145 women of reproductive age. Random sampling was conducted in which every individual had an equal chance to be selected and structured self-administered questionnaire were used to collect. Data was entered to Microsoft excel and then exported to SPSS version 20.0 for further analysis. Results: Of 145 women approached and filled the questionnaires 97(66.8%) had knowledge on intrauterine device through knowing what it is and how does it look like but only 30(20.7%) reported to ever use the device. Many women who do not use the device reported to have misconceptions and perceptions on the device pertaining the side effects, concerns on overall procedure of its insertion and removal. Conclusion: The study aimed to determine the knowledge and attitude upon Intrauterine device as a modern contraceptive method among reproductive aged women attending Kambarage health Centre. Based on the study the results showed that more than half of respondents were knowledgeable on the device 97(66.8%) but had negative attitude toward the device that it might increase the risk of infertility, ectopic pregnancy as well as they are much concerned of its insertion and removal.
