Abstract:
Background information: Despite the high prevalence of Sickle cell disease(SCD) in Tanzania, there is a poor level of understanding and knowledge among Tanzanian toward the disease, and screening practice. Hence increasing of number of diseased population with late diagnose of SCD. Finally make the problem of sickle cell disease to remain high in terms of morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess knowledge about sickle cell disease screening among undergraduate students at CUHAS, Mwanza, Tanzania.
Objectives: Assess knowledge about sickle cell disease screening among undergraduate students at CUHAS, Mwanza, Tanzania.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 344 students of CUHAS selected by convenient sampling technique among students at CUHAS, Mwanza, Tanzania. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on the research variables. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS version 20 statistical computer software package.
Conclusion: Despite low levels of knowledge about sickle cell disease screening among Tanzanian, the knowledge of undergraduate CUHAS students regarding SCD and screening was generally good to moderate, this finding could be because these students were in medical school where they were taught in lectures about SCD and screening, also obtain experience about SCD and screening from clinical practice.
