Abstract:
Background: Analgesics are safe for human use when used rationally. The abuse of both prescription only and over-the-counter analgesics has become a serious health problem in Africa. This research is done to determine the pattern and factors associated with self-prescribed analgesics use among university students in Mwanza.
Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in Mwanza region, Tanzania among university students enrolled at SAUT and CUHAS universities from 17 April 2023 to 28 April 2023. The data was tabulated using Microsoft excel and analysed using STATA version 16.
Results/Discussion: SAUT students were more likely to use prescription only analgesics compared to CUHAS students with a P-value of 0.01. Students in lower years of study had significantly higher chance of using prescription only analgesics compared to students in the final years of study in which the P-value was decreasing from 0.7 in the second year to 0.002 in the fifth year.
Conclusion: There is an increasing burden of irrational use and abuse of both over-the-counter and prescription only analgesics in Tanzania especially among university students. Hence, restriction measures for controlled drugs use should be strictly enforced.
