Abstract:
Background: Hypertension is a systematic disease and pregancy induced hypertension complicates about 10% of all pregnancies causing a high mortality and morbidity rate. It causes about 50% of maternal deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa. Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy are the second cause of maternal deaths after hemorrhage.Pre eclampsia and eclampsia being the leading cause with 3-10% prevelance.Pre eclampsia increases the risk of complications for both the fetus and the mother. And the risks increase in women with multiple gestatison, nulliparty and history of pre eclampsia. High blood pressure disorders have the mortality rate and most of the risks can be preventable in early identification of women with the risks.
Objective: The main objective was to review the antenatal blood pressure record of adult pregnant women with hypertensive disorders admitted at Bugando Medical Center.
Methodology: The analytical crossectional study based on antenatal blood pressure records among adult women at Bugando Medical Center admitted for delivery was carried out.
Results: The results revealed that , majority of pregnant women had their blood pressure measured (82%) from which 46.5% their blood pressure was elevated with the mean systolic pressure of 141.19 (SD 16.754) and the mean diastolic pressure of 90.26 (SD 11.390). During the course of pregnancy, most of the pregnant women had their blood pressure elevated making the number of those with high blood pressure increasing during the course of pregnancy. 75.2% of pregnant women during the study had their blood pressure elevated making the bigger number from the ANC visit (47%). The mean systolic blood pressure was found to be 167.66 (SD 40.027) with the mean diastolic pressure of 102.97 (SD 21.129).
Conclusion: The proportion of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women attending ANC in Bugando Medical Centre is high. The possible risk factor related to the risk of developing pre-eclampsia were family history, having a history of pre-eclampsia and history of chronic illness.
