Prevalence and Maternal Outcomes of Ante Partum Hemorrhage among Pregnant Women Delivering at Mwanza City, Tanzania.

Abstract:
Background: Hemorrhage is the main cause of maternal death during pregnancy. Ante partum hemorrhage remains to be an important cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity in developing countries, approximately 4 pregnant women among 100 admitted during the ante natal period are diagnosed to have APH.
Methods: Cross sectional study in which pregnant women above 18 years who consented to give socio demographic and clinical information will be interviewed and personal details will be collected.
Results: The prevalence of APH has found to be 19.08% where out of 46 cases of maternal complications of APH, uterine rupture contributed to 2.3%, blood transfusion after delivery contributed to 13% and 76.1% of cases delivered vaginally with no reported maternal death.
Conclusion: APH is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, which could be prevented by regular antenatal care, early detection of high-risk cases, and early referral to higher center, Good facilities for delivery with well-trained personnel’s, availability of blood banks and multidisciplinary approach can improve maternal outcome of APH.
