Abstract:
Background: Unwanted pregnancies among adolescent secondary school girls are contributed by various factors which leads to its increased prevalence. Data on the factors contributing to unwanted pregnancies among adolescent secondary school girls are still scarce in Nyamagana District in Mwanza- Tanzania despite the fact that the problem exists in the District, this necessitate the need for further research to address the contributing factors to unwanted pregnancies in Nyamagana district.
Objectives: The study aimed to determine factors contributing to unwanted pregnancies among adolescent secondary schools girls at Nyamagana district- Mwanza
Methods: This was a cross sectional study involving secondary schools girls at Nyamagana district which will be conducted from MAY to JULY 2023. Number of participants enrolled was 309, assessment of factors contributing to unwanted pregnancies among adolescent secondary school girls at Nyamagana district was carried out through structured questionnaires. Sociodemographic and other relevant information was collected. Data was entered into Microsoft Excel and then exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS version 25.0) for further analysis and presented in the percentages and table. The analysis of the strength of relationship between categorical variables was compared using Chi- Square test while continuous variable was compared using the T-test. A p-value of <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. The budget used wasTshs. 297,000/=
Results:Majority of respondents (56.77%) new well about unwanted pregnancies with the factors associated.
Discussion:The study mentioned low education among girls as the main factor of unwanted pregnancies among adolescent secondary school girls and poor parental guidance occupying only 12.5%.
Conclusion/recommendation:The compaign messages to increase level of knowledge should be tailored to girls together with the support from parents pertaining unwanted pregnancies.
