Abstract:
Background: Hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120. High blood pressure often has no symptoms over time, if untreated; it can cause heath conditions. The rate of blood pressure control among hypertensive patients post dialysis is poor and the reason for poor control of blood pressure remain poorly understood globally.
Objective: to assess the blood pressure control and risk associated among adult hypertensive patients post dialysis.
Material and methods: Hospital based cross sectional study among adult hypertensive patients on haemodialysisi at BMC hospital dialysis unit was conducted. Data on socio demographic characteristics of the participants and adhere to antihypertensive medication(s) were collected from patients by face to face interview using a pretested structured questionnaire, obtained data was analyzed by computer.
Discussion: 85 of them were eligible and studied. The response rate was 99%. Sixty five (76.5%) of the participants were males. Fifty two (61.6%) of the participant were married. The most common religion were Christianity, 80(94.1%) and Islam 5(5.9%). The majority 73(85.9%) of the participants have physically inactive. More than half, 72(84.7%) of the participants were been taken salt with food. Two participants (2.4%) were cigarette smokers, 66(77.6%) were alcohol drinkers and (82.7%) among participate have poor adherence.
Conclusion: Almost half of the hypertensive patients post dialysis had uncontrolled blood pressure. We recommend better health education and care of patients to improve the rate of blood pressure control at the hospital
