Adherence to clinic attendance, knowledge on risk factors for stroke and its prevention among hypertensive patients at Ligula Regional Referral Hospital, Mtwara, Tanzania

Abstract:
Background: Stroke is a common complication of hypertension which leading to high mortality and the morbidity. It may be prevented by hypertension control and life style modification, the latter includes weight reduction, smoking cessation, reduction of the alcohol intake and engaging in the regular exercise. The incidenceof stroke has now decreased in the high-income countries and increased in the low-income counties including Tanzania partly due to lack of knowledge on the modifiable risky factors and intervention to reduce the scene.
This study aims at determining the knowledge level on risk factors for stroke and its prevention among hypertensive patient at. This will inform an appropriate intervention to reduce the risk of stroke at Ligula Regional and Referral Hospital
Objective: Was to assess the Knowledge for the risky factors and prevention of Stroke among hypertensive patients attending regular clinic at LRRH OPD
Method: This was a cross- section based study which will be conducted in September 2021. Questionnaires will be to collect participant’s demographic and clinical information in which 270 patients will be involved in the study.
Results: About 70% of participants found to have good the general presentation of stroke, awareness toward risk and client based mitigation of stroke prevention, despite the increase of the knowledge but there is still knowledge gap on how this risk factors contribute to stroke.
Conclusion: Study revealed that there is good adherence to clinic but the general knowledge on the stroke prevention is good among hypertensive patients but there is increase on the awareness of the risk factors and prevention measures for stroke but there is still a knowledge gap as to how risk factors contribute to stroke in majority of the participants.
