Prevalence of anaemia and associated factors among pregnant women attending Makongoro Clinic, Mwanza, Tanzania

It has been associated greatly with increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality Objectives; To determine the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women and the factors associated with anemia during pregnancy among pregnant women attending Makongoro antenatal care clinic from September to October 2021. Methods; a cross sectional study was conducted at Makongoro clinic from September to October 2021. Systematic sampling was used to select participants and data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires and Hb level from ANC card. Data was analyzed using SPSS software version 20. Chi square, odds ratio and p value were used to check association Results; The overall prevalence of anemia using cut off of HB <11 from WHO was 49.4% from a total of 330 respondents out of all anemic women 119 (73%) were mild anemic and 44 (27%) were moderate anemic there was no anyone who has severe or very severe anemia. Age, marital status, eating pica, getting iron supplements, history of abortion and sleeping under ITN shown significant association with anemia in pregnancy Conclusion; The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in this study is high 49.4% .Health education and creating awareness on maternal nutrition during pregnancy should be emphasized in association with ANC follow up and Iron supplementation should be strictly applied for all pregnant mothers
