Background; Reproductive planning by HIV infected females is of essence because it AIDS to prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child .And the use of contraceptives will reduce vertical transmission from the mother to child, and will prevent unintended pregnancy among HIV infected females adolescents. Globally 1.8 million adolescents are living with HIV.
AIM; This study aimed to determine the factors associated with contraceptives uses among HIV infected females adolescents attending at care and treatment centre at Bugando Medical Centre.
Method; A cross sectional study was conducted at Care and Treatment Centre at Bugando Medical Centre among HIV infected female adolescents in September and October 2021. Simple random method was used to select participants and data was collected using structured questionnaires. Data has been analyzed using SPSS software version 20. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Joint CUHAS/BMC Research and ethics committee.
Results: A total number of 160 respondents were involved in the study. The prevalence of contraceptives method use among HIV infected female adolescents attending at Bugando medical centre was 10%. The main reasons associated with contraceptives use were having sexual partners, number of sexual partners and source of information on contraceptives methods. The most common contraceptives used were condom (7.5%) and the major source of the contraceptives was pharmacy (5%).
Conclusion: The prevalence of contraceptive use among HIV infected female adolescents attending at Bugando medical centre was low.
