Abstract:
Background: Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria can be prevented and cured. The Tanzania Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG) of 2017 indicates the Artemether/ Lumefantrine combination (ALU) to be used as the first line treatment of malaria in both children and adults. The most common brands of ALU in Tanzania are Comalather, Coartem, Artefan and Lumarten. However, the presence of substandard ant malaria drugs is a global health threat especially in developing countries such as Tanzania. Thus, a need for frequent quality evaluation tests of ALU tablet brands available in pharmacies.
Methodology: Laboratory based analytical and experimental study done to evaluate the quality of different brands of ALU tables. The study was done in TMDA laboratory in Mwanza.
Results/Discussion: Results showed that all the six brands that were used for analysis passed all the tests. Due to budget constrain the sample was limited and thus this may be too small to provide a representative picture of the situation.
Conclusion: Since all the brands passed all the tests, it is only natural to say that they are safe to use for their intended use.
