Knowledge, awareness and attitude towards preventive measures of Corona Virus (COVID19) among medical students at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences, Mwanza, Tanzania

Abstract:
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health and societal emergency that requires the adoption of unprecedented measures to control the rapid spread of the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic. Resident’s adherence to control measure is affected by their knowledge, awareness and altitudes towards the disease, and it highly spread in countries which lack of screening campaigns, mass education on the preventive measures and lack of implementation of the practices for prevention of COVID-19 disease, therefore. This study aims to describe the knowledge, awareness and altitude towards corona virus preventive measures among medical students at CUHAS.
Method: This was a cross sectional study which was carried out in Catholic University of Health and Allied Science between January and February 2021. 385 participants were recruited through random sampling method. Data were collected using questionnaires to obtain information on knowledge, awareness and altitude towards corona virus preventive measures among medical students at CUHAS. Analysis on participants’ demographic characteristics, knowledge, awareness, altitude towards corona virus preventive measures among medical students at CUHAS was done using SPSS version 20.
Results: This study had a total of 385 respondents and all the respondents had heard about COVID-19 (100%). Also 303/385 (78.7%) of respondents knew the symptoms of COVID-19 and majority of the participants had a good awareness (88.1%) while minority of the respondents had poor awareness (11.9%) on the practices for prevention of COVID-19 disease. With 68.7% of respondents had good attitude while 31.3% had poor attitude towards COVID-19 preventive measures.
Conclusion: With a positive attitude regarding COVID-19 preventive measures, also this study found that there is good knowledge and awareness about COVID-19 preventive measures among medical students at CUHAS-BUGANDO, Mwanza, Tanzania.
Recommendations: Education programs should be set to increase the level of awareness of COVID-19 disease to the university students and general public through mass media.
