Abstract:
Background: Hypertension is a blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or more, based on at least two leadings on separate occasions. Risk factors for hypertension include age, gender, (male > female), ethnic origin, diet (especially foods risk in facts, cholesterol, high calories, salt), stress, sedentary lifestyle, degree of urbanization, family history, blood cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, pre-existing vascular diseases. Hypertension is a public health problem, and yet few people are aware of it and even fewer access effective treatment. With the ongoing demographic transition in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, people are changing from rural manual work to urban lifestyles, hence the risk of hypertension increases.
Objective: This study aimed at assessing knowledge, attitude and what do the hypertensive patients do (practice) to keep themselves normotensive. The information that was obtained in this study is required for decision making on possible intervention strategies.
Methodology: Cross sectional study approach was used because of the nature of the data needed. The study was descriptive cross-sectional survey because it assesses exposure and outcome at the same time also enabling easy assessment of knowledge, attitude, practice and complications associated with hypertension.
