Abstract:
Background: In cities and towns of Tanzania there have been rapidly increase of street food vendors also known as “Mama Ntilie” due to fast growing of economic activities as a source of employment of provision of daily food consumption. Most of time street foods preparation is done in unfavorable environment include poor hygiene such as mishandling is done in unfavorable temperature, unsafe water availability, and unhygienic serious threat to the health of consumers.
Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of food hygiene and safety practices among street food vendors in Nyamagana Municipal North western Tanzania.
Methods: A cross-sectional based study was conducted in Nyamagana District, Mwanza. A total of 112 street food vendors and 224 clients were involved. Structured questionnaire and observation using checklist were used to collect data. Finally data was entered, cleaned and analysed by using SPSS version 20.
Results/Conclusion: It is concluded that the practice of street food vendors on food hygiene and safety practices was poor despite of their positive attitude and adequate knowledge.
