Prevalence of HIV with tuberculosis co-infection and drugs adherence on treatment of tuberculosis among patients attending CTC at Sekou Toure Hospital, Mwanza, Tanzania

According to WHO Tuberculosis (TB) is the major health problem and one third of TB-infected patients are co-infected with HIV/AIDS and main cause of two third of death among patients co-infected. No-adherence to Tuberculosis treatment lead to drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and hence treatment failure. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of TB co-infection and drugs adherence on TB treatment. Method: This study was hospital based retrospective review of documents for patients attending CTC at SekouToure for treatment of tuberculosis between January 2019 and April 2020. Research was conducted for one month from April 2020 to May 2020. Then collected data filled in excel and analysed by SPSS. Results: A total of 280 TB patients’ files was included in the study. The magnitude of HIV with tuberculosis co-infection was 96 (34.3%) and drugs adherence on treatment of tuberculosis was 68 (70.8%) while non-adherence was 28 (29.2%) among patient attending Sekou Toure clinic. A significant association were phase of treatment (p-value=0.038), patient category (p-value=0.050) and treatment outcomes (p-value=0.027) Conclusion: The study highlighted that the level of HIV and tuberculosis co-infection and drug adherence on tuberculosis among patient attended care and treatment clinic was higher which is important to reduce drug resistance and treatment failure, which finally low morbidity and mortality. By providing intensive education programs for patient and family members to motivate treatment adherence and focusing on dose.
