Background: Non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are group of medicine that relieve pain and fever and reduce inflammation. Long term using of NSAIDs may lead to gastro intestinal damage vary from erosion and sub mucosal hemorrhage to ulceration also associated with occult blood protein. This caused by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis which prevents stomach mucosa from being eroded by its own acid also can be cause by physiochemical of NSAIDs.
Methodology: The study conducted by using cross-sectional descriptive study to determine the awareness of patient about adverse effect of NSAIDs based on gastrointestinal damage. The patient from orthopedic and physiotherapy department at Bugando Medical Centre were enrolled and data from answered questionnaires was entered to Microsoft and exported to SPSS for analysis.
Result and discussion: About 219(56.9%) were not aware gastrointestinal damage induced by use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. 43.1% complaints to have stomach pain after using NSAIDs. Also frequency of concomitant use of gastro protective was low only 34.5% of patients were using PPI.
Conclusion and Recommendation: Majority of patients were not aware of gastrointestinal damage induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and those who were aware get information after getting side effect. Education should be given to promote proper use of NSAIDs.
