Knowledge, attitude and practice of drugs that impair driving among commercial drivers in Geita, Tanzania

Some drivers use drugs before driving, 5% to 25% of accidents involves drivers are positive of drugs, all confirmed by blood samples. The aims of the study: The aim of the study is to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice on drug that impair driving among commercial drivers at Geita region. Method: A cross sectional community based study was carried out among commercial drivers in Geita region. Drivers were interviewed face to face using questionnaire after obtaining verbal consent from the individual driver. Questionnaire were written in both English and Swahili language. Results: Majority of commercial drivers (39.7%) had poor knowledge of the drugs that impairs driving, this may be due to poor or inadequate information from different sources like pharmacy, hospital, radio and television. Drugs that were mostly mentioned by drivers, having effects on driving were, cetirizine, valium, SP, ALU, phenobarbitone, chlorphenamine, ciprofloxacillin, doxycycline and the effects mentioned were drugs, 58 (14.9%) mentioned sedation, 5 (1.3%) mentioned pruritus, 39 (10%) mentioned drowsiness, 14 (3.6%) mentioned body weakness and 65 (16.7%) mentioned more than one side effects (multiple response). Majority of commercial drivers had good attitude and average practice on the drugs that may impair driving. Conclusion: Medicines that affects driving are problem to the society. Road traffic accidents are on the increase in Tanzania and one of the causal factors may be the intake of medicines that impair driving. This has shown that most of the drivers interviewed had taken medication that could have affected their driving but did not know what to do when the medication affected adversely. This indicates that drivers were not well informed about the effects of these medicines and the actions to be taken.
