Retrospective study of musculo-skeletal tumours at Bugando Medical Centre in 2018, Mwanza, Tanzania.

Their geographical distribution varies greatly around the world, in Asia; the annual distribution of musculoskeletal tumor was 624 against 8,805 cases of colorectal cancer and 6532 cases of lung cancer in 2008-2014. In USA, the annual distribution of bone tumors was 0.2% and soft tissue was 0.7% against 18.3% of digestive system, 14.5% of breast cancer, 13.9% of respiratory system cancer and 7.9% of urinary system in 2006-2010. Methodology: This was a retrospective hospital based descriptive study of patient with musculoskeletal tumours seen in orthopedics department at BMC in 2018. The structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from patient files and data was analyzed by using SPSS. Results: The prevalence of bone tumours was 4.88%, with female predominance and commonest affected age is between (11-20) years. The common used mode of diagnosis is histological 33 (58.8%) and mode of treatment is excision, chemotherapy and amputation. Conclusion: The study shows the burden of MSS tumour is 4.9% with female predominance as well as the most affected is children of school age and late adolescents. The mode of diagnosis is histological mostly used and tumour excision as well as chemotherapy and amputation is mode of treatment used at BMC.
