Assessment of Compliance to Antihypertensive Drugs for Hypertensive Patients attending Clinic at Bugando Medical Centre.

Background: Patients compliance to anti-hypertensive drugs regimen is a complex but important factor in archiving blood pressure control and reducing adverse cardiovascular outcomes like stroke, and renal failure. Worldwide approximately one half of the patients with hypertension adhere to the prescribed medications but fewer than one in three patients have controlled blood pressure.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the compliance to anti-hypertensive drugs among hypertensive patients who attend clinic at Bugando medical centre.
Methods: This was a cross sectional study and Data were collected using a simple structured questionnaires and analyzed by IBM SPSS version 20. Compliance to antihypertensive was assessed by Morisky medication adherence scale. The results were presented in tables and graphs.
Outcomes: 138 hypertensive patient who attended clinic at BMC were recruited 55.1% of them reported to have good compliance with medication according to Morisky scale assessment. Social demographics like age (p=0.000) has direct relation with compliance but other contributed to compliance without direct association, that is female (69%) married (61%), self-employed (47%), primary school certificate holders (47%). Those with good knowledge of hypertension and associated complication has high compliance (p=0.001) and those who follow up on radio and TV programs on hypertension has high compliance (p=0.024).
Conclusion: Despite awareness of severe complication that might be caused by poor managed blood pressure, only half of hypertensive patients comply well with antihypertensive drugs. The main reason being financial constraint.
