Background: Hypertension is a common health problem worldwide with an estimated prevalence in adult populations worldwide of about 26.4% and project to be 29.2% by 2025 patients, and a cause of 7.1 million (one-third) of global preventable premature deaths. It is one of the important reasons to visit medical centers in both developed and developing countries. It is estimated that hypertension is responsible for 62% of cerebrovascular diseases and 49% of ischemic heart diseases, and can be an significant cause of mortality due to its complications such as coronary arterial diseases, stroke and renal failure.
Methods: This was a cross sectional study which involved 113 hypertensive patients and was conducted at Nyamagana District Hospital. The management and analysis of data was done using SPSS software version 20. The study duration started from September 2019 to November 2019, data was collected by interview, and the clearance to carry out this study was sought from the joint CUHAS and BMC Research, Ethics and Review Committee.
Results: A total of 113 patients participated and majority 63 (55.8%) were female. About half (69.0%) were aged between 45 to 64 years. About 34.5%, had received only primary education and nearly 40 (35.4%) were self-employed. Majority 34 (30.1%) had hypertension for 1-2 years. The knowledge and practice towards hypertension was found to be average, whereas the attitude was found to be good.
Conclusion: The current knowledge, attitude and practice among hypertension patients at Nyamagana District Hospital (NDH is not sufficient and satisfying and should therefore improved
