Incidence and Patterns of Childhood Acquired Heart Disease among Children Attending Cardiac at Bugando Medical Centre. A Retrospective ECHO Cardiography Study.

Aim: This study will be conducted to determine the incidence and patterns of childhood acquired heart diseases among children attending cardiac clinic at BMC. Methods: This study will be a retrospective echocardiography study. Data analysis will be done using STATA version 13 Results: Of the 178 children, 84 children were diagnosed with AHDs. Rheumatic heart disease was the most common AHD seen in 37(42.7%) patients, followed by dilated cardiomyopathy/myocarditis in 26(32.7%) patients and pericardial effusion in 9(10.9%) patients. Less common lesions encountered were Kawasaki disease, infective endocarditis and endomyocardial fibrosis. Conclusion: Rheumatic heart disease is still the most common AHD in the children in this study. The pattern of AHD is similar to other studies in developing countries.
