Abstract:
Background: ESBL producing bacteria refer to the bacteria which produce enzyme which degrade the beta lactam ring which is the functional group of penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotic classes. These bacteria have bacteria have become to be a global threatening, and this is due to increase misuse of antibiotics in different fields such as medical field, agricultural field, and livestock keeping field. It has led to increase of incident patient with long time of treatment, increase cost and sometime has led to loose of life of the patient. Due to limited information available about the prevalence of ESBLs producing bacteria.
Objective: This study has provided the basic data/information about the prevalence of ESBLs producing bacteria in households of people with urinary tract infection in Mwanza region.
Methodology: A community based cross section study was conducted from first April to 30th July 29, 2019, rectal swab and environmental swab was collected and transported in Stuart transport media to B1 laboratory in CUHAS-BMC. Specimens were involved in MCA supplemented with Cefotaxime, positive culture was subculture and/or purity plated on MCA/Cefo. Every sample was given a unique identification number, culture data were recorded on the log book then entered to excel for coding and cleaning, and then data was transferred to STATA version 13 for analysis.
Results: A total of 392 sample were collected from environment and domestic animal of the household. The study found the prevalence of 334/392 (85.2%) of ESBLs producing bacteria were by Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and E. coli bacteria were the leading ESBLs producing bacteria in environment and animal respectively.
Conclusion: The prevalence of ESBLs producing bacteria is very high in household of people with UTI in Mwanza region.
