Abstract:
Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women worldwide and it remains the leading cause of cancer related death among women. In Tanzania it is a health problem. Although it is among the preventable cancers, majority of women in this country present with advanced disease. In developed countries national cancer screening programs have allowed women to be diagnosed at earlier stages. In Tanzania, it is still a challenge.
Methods: A cross-sectional study using quantitative technique was conducted within the district. An interviewer administered questionnaire was used as an instrument to assess knowledge, attitude and practices towards screening of the cervix among women of reproductive age. Data was be analysed by using SPSS version 20.0 software.
Results: There was low level of knowledge among the interviewed concerning the symptoms, risk factors and preventive measures linked with cancer of cervix and attitude towards screening was not satisfactory.
Conclusion: The study revealed the level of knowledge among the interviewed concerning the symptoms risk factors and preventive measures linked with cancer of cervix was found to be low.
