Prevalence, Knowledge and Attitude Towards The Complications of Diabetic Mellitus to Pulmonary Tuberculosis Among Diabetic Patients at Bugando Medical Centre.

Background: Since the early part of the 20th century, clinicians have observed an association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and TB, although they were often unable to determine whether DM caused TB or whether TB led to the clinical manifestation of DM. So this study was conducted in Bugando medical centre in Mwanza, Tanzania, whereby it included only diabetic patient attending at MOPD, aiming to assess the knowledge on pulmonary tuberculosis itself on the ways of transmission signs and symptoms as well as predisposing factors for developing pulmonary tuberculosis in diabetic patient.
Methods and material: The study was descriptive cross sectional study, hospital based only 125 patients were interviewed using structured closed questionnaire.
Results: The results were as follows; most of patients knew how pulmonary tuberculosis is transmitted (73.6%) but few of them know exactly signs and symptoms (13.6%) also few of them knew the predisposing factors (3.2%).
Conclusion: It is conducted that pulmonary tuberculosis is diabetic patients can be brought down by creating awareness periodically more education on signs and symptoms of PTB and predisposing factors specifically in diabetic patients. In respect to these results, health education concerning the disease is highly recommended.
