Abstract:
HIV/AIDS care and ART therapy are rapidly expanding in Africa but most care and treatment programs are still clinic based an individual approach to HIV care and treatment. However HIV discordance is common among couples in Africa ranging from 3% to 20% in the general population (6-8) and 30% to 51% within couples in which one partner seeks HIV care services (9-11). However knowledge of partner’s HIV status is extremely low (6, 15). Therefore it is imperative that HIV discordant couples are identified and counseled to prevent further transmission. In the retrospective cross sectional study done here at Bugando medical centre, out of 586 people who were diagnosed with HIV last year and attendant CTC last year, only 32 of them were discordant couples of which 23 (71.9%) was the males as the index partner while 9 (28.1%) was the female as the index partner. If the total number of HIV –infected patients seen in 2016 was 586 and 32 were part of a discordant couple then the prevalence of discordant couples was 5.5%.
