Determining Prevalence, Demographics and Risk Factors of Chronic Tonsillitis in Ward E9 in Bugando Medical Centre from May - 2014 to May -2015.

Abstract:
Background: Tonsillitis is inflammation of pharyngeal Tonsil that usual extend to the Adenoid, is reading causes of admission at ENT department at Bugando medical centre most often occur in children and most common occur in children younger than 2 years, bacterial typically cause at age of 5-15 years, while viral cause in younger children. Though there is no study done to know prevalence of chronic adenotonsilitis at Bugando medical centre but there is study done on allergic rhinitis and its comorbidities but Anedotonsil hypertroph were contributory as comorbidities and prevalence was 55%, nature history include acute tonsillitis to recurrent tonsillitis to chronic tonsillitis to tonsilar enlargement to peritonsilar abscess. Hence there is no study done to know the prevalence and risk factor on Tonsillitis.
Methods: An observation retrospective cohort study done which is hospital based, at Bugando medical centre hospital is located at northwestern part of united republic of Tanzania along the shores of great Lake Victoria. About 196 sample were selected and all not meted the selection criteria were excluded and sapling procedure data were abstained from medical records department and checklist were used to obtain information from files and patient registry pay attention variable of interest and ethical were considered.
Results: A total of 196 sample were included, the prevalence were high in age group of 6 months to 7 year about 78.1% and low between 46-60 years about and most cases were come from Mwanza region and male are more affected about 50.5% most associated factor were URTI about 23.5% but most no risk factors identified research identified about 66.85%.
Conclusion: In this study prevalence is 78.1% high in age group of 6 month to 7 year and more in Mwanza and more male gender and associated with URTI as risk factor so they are associated with development of chronic tonsillitis and lead adenotonsilar enlargement so we recommendation to increase resource in department to overcome the burden of patient, another study to know why at this age and why male more affected and we recommend to strengthening the vaccination program and health education to community about overcrowding.
