Prevalence of Patients Using Traditional Medicine and Conventional Medicine in the Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Attending Clinic at Sengerema Designated District Hospital.

Abstract:
Background: Diabetes mellitus is major cause of mortality worldwide 347M people are affected with it in 2013, so diabetic patients try to find ways so as they can manage the disease. Traditional medicine has now become a common act among people with diabetes patients but little is known on the safety of this drugs to many patients and other members of the community, there number of factors which can cause them use TM in the management of DM this are it can be easily accessible, cheapness, advices they get from their families and relatives especially those with DM who tells them that the TM are more effective.
Methods: It was a cross sectional study and it involved all type 2 Diabetic patients attending clinic at Sengerema hospital, patients were given questionnaires written in Swahili language and they were require to fill them after that results were transferred into an excel spread sheet then data was analyzed by STATA version 13 where continuous data were summarized by using mean and standard deviation or medial and interquartile range. Categorical data were summarized by using proportion or percentage factors associated with the use of traditional medicine in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus were determined by using a chi square test and factors with P value < 0.05 will be regarded as statistically significant at 95% confidence interval.
Results: 203 patients were enrolled in this study were 126 participants (66.3%) agreed that they have been using TMs for the management of DM, out of 126 participants 86 confirmed that they have been using this TM and conventional medicine concurrently 68.2%, age was the factor that contributed with the use of TM in patients that is patients with older ages were more likely to use TM. Individuals with diabetes mellitus got the information on TM use from their friends and relatives (50%), mass media (34.7%) and at the hospital (15.3%).
Conclusion: It can be concluded that TM use was commonly practice among people with DM at Sengerema DDH and most of them used them concurrently without knowing side effects which will be caused by using them concurrently with conventional medicine, since most of the respondents said that they found it right using TM in concurrence with conventional medicine so their less aware of side effects.
