Abstract:
Major depressive is one among the major mood syndromes with some of the clarifiers being the first episode or the recurrent episode history without of mania and hypomania, the presence of or absence of psychotic symptoms together with the presence of absence of vegetative symptoms. According to WHO, depression is a common illness worldwide with an estimated 350 million people affected with more women affected compared to men.
Diabetes mellitus is chronic aligh in a non-accidental way and tend to complicate one another.
The main objective of this research was to determining the prevalence of MDD among adults and paediatric diabetic patients attending diabetic clinic at Bugando medical centre.
A cross section study was conducted with an estimated sample size of 126. And the following was observed, from data collected with a sample size of 126, 86 participants were adults diabetic patients aged from 18 years and above, whereby they were all interviewed with a response rate of 100%, among these 7 (8.1%) of them had no MDD symptoms, 13 ((15.1%) of them had minimal symptoms of MDD, 21 (24.4%) of them had mild symptoms of MDD, 27 (31.4%) of them had moderate symptoms of MDD, 12 (14%) of them had moderately severe symptoms of MDD, and lastly 6 (7%) of them had severe symptoms of MDD.
This led to a conclusion that, the prevalence of MDD is higher in adults DM patients compared to pediatrics DM patients, attending Bugando medical centre diabetic clinic, due to the fact that adults understands what is happening to them, and it is difficult for them to cope with the new life style on the limitations of foods and drinks, on taking the medications being injections or oral hypoglycemic, the complications of DM, as symptoms of DM occurs at an elderly age compared to the pediatrics DM patients they do not suffer much from MDD, because they have little knowledge on what is happening to them and since that most of them get the symptoms of DM at a younger age hence they adapt easily the new life style and the routine taking of DM medications or injections which makes them less likely to be suffering from symptoms of MDD.
