The parents involved in my study were selected from all children admitted in malnutrition unit in Bugando medical centre, whose their parents willing to participate were enrolled in study, questionnaires were used to assess these parents. A total of 120 children were included in the study. The awareness of parents towards risk factors was, 95 (79.2%) and towards symptoms of malnutrition was 77 (64.2%). The study has revealed knowledge about malnutrition to be low compared to other places where studies were done. Those who were knowledgeable about the disease majority of them were aware of few associated risk factors and symptoms, therefore health education to parents about the disease is the foremost strategy towards raising the awareness.

Abstract:

This study determined awareness and perception, on risk factors and symptoms of malnutrition among parents in malnutrition unit in Bugando medical centre.

The parents involved in my study were selected from all children admitted in malnutrition unit in Bugando medical centre, whose their parents willing to participate were enrolled in study, questionnaires were used to assess these parents.

A total of 120 children were included in the study. The awareness of parents towards risk factors was, 95 (79.2%) and towards symptoms of malnutrition was 77 (64.2%). The study has revealed knowledge about malnutrition to be low compared to other places where studies were done.

Those who were knowledgeable about the disease majority of them were aware of few associated risk factors and symptoms, therefore health education to parents about the disease is the foremost strategy towards raising the awareness.
