Abstract:
A cross sectional community base study was conducted in Kasamwa and Lubanga wards of Geita district, to assess knowledge, attitude and practice of contraceptives among women of reproductive age.
A total of 210 women were interviewed; a higher proportion (68.6%) had the age ranging between 18 and 35 years and 60.0% of the study population had primary education. Most of them (96.9%) had a very good level of knowledge about contraceptives.
The prevalence of contraceptive use was found to be 59.4% and pills being the most used contraceptive method.
Socio- demographic characteristics of women were found to associate with contraceptive use and level of education of a woman being the most important factor in the awareness of contraception issues.
It is recommended that, more emphasis should be put to educate women so as to increase the prevalence of contraceptive use and also condom use should be promoted since it is cheap and easier to use and without forgetting other advantages in preventing sexually transmitted diseases including HIV.
