Most of people are undiagnosed of this disease resulting in increased diabetic complications. Objective: To determine blood glucose level and risk factors for impaired fasting blood glucose among undergraduate students at CUHAS Bugando in Mwanza city. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study involving undergraduate students at CUHAS Bugando in Mwanza city was carried out from June to July 2016. World Health Organization stepwise approach was employed to collect data on demographic, behavioral and physical characteristics. Blood sample after fasting for ≥ 8 hours was assayed for glucose, Statistical analysis was performed by using STATA (version 11 USA). Results: The majority of participants had normal fasting blood glucose, 175 (96.15%) while about 7 (3.8%) had impaired fasting blood Glucose (IFBG) with female gender showing higher rate of IFBG of 9.09%. Increased occurrence of IFBG was observed with increasing age but again not statistically significant (P>0.05). With body mass index, waist circumference, and sex of the participants. Predictors for IFBG in the study were high waist circumference (P=0.002), Body Mass Index (p=0.000) and sex (p=0.010). Conclusion: The result showed majority of the students have normal fasting blood glucose but also IFBG was found to be higher which is in line with the predicted global increase in DM to be much in developing countries. This calls for the necessity of several screen of population to ensure well control of the problem.
