Abstract:
A Descriptive cross sectional study was done between August and September 2011 at Bugando Medical Centre among 117 patients who attended endoscopy unit and diagnosed to have peptic ulcer diseases. The incidence of PUD was 14.9% and a total of 782 patients attended endoscopy in the year 2011.
Generally there is high incidence of gastric ulcer between age 21-40 years old (41.9%) and more in females (54.8%) compared to males (45.2%) and the most common clinical presentation in gastric ulcer is epigastric pain (45.7%) followed by hematemesis/anaemia (35.6%). Gastic ulcer is the common peptic ulcer disease (53%) compared to duodenal ulcer (43.6%) but only (3.4%) has both gastric and duodenal ulcers. The common age group affected was >60 (50%) and both male and females are equally affected.
The most common age group affected by duodenal is between 41-60 years old (36%), followed by 21-40 years old (30%), males are more affected by duodenal ulcer (58.8%) than females (41.2%). The commonest clinical in duodenal ulcer is also epigastric pain followed by hematemesis/anaemia
