Mother and Caregiver Awareness and Practice on Management of Common Cold and Cough for Children Under Five Years of Age at Makongoro Health Centre

Abstract:
Background: Common cold ad cough are among upper respiratory tract infection that account for many clinic visiting. The main causative agents are virus and 50% of all deaths in children under-fives years in developing country is caused by respiratory viral infection.
Methods: A cross section study design was conducted at Makongoro health centre in Mwanza. The study involved 384 mothers or caregivers with under-five children/child with common cold and cough to see their awareness and practice on management.
Results: Total of 384 mothers and caregivers were studied. Out of 384 323 (84.1%) were mothers. The mean age of participants was 25 with ±6.1 SD and of children was 9 months ± 8.8 SD. 373 (97.1%) of children had common cold and cough. Mothers and care giver were aware more on frequency of getting diseases 68.5%, if cold accompany with cough the cough is either dry or productive 71.1% and child takes 3-7 day or more for recover 54.4%. There was poor awareness on causes 27.6% and sign/symptoms 40.6%. On practice the first action was to go to the drug shops.
Discussion: 97.1% of child had common cold and cough which is different from study done at Pakistan whereby 68% children had cold and cough. This study is slightly similar to study done at Pakistan whereby mother and caregiver had poor awareness on causes and sign/symptoms 59.4%. Also most of mothers and care giver practiced self-medication by using natural remedies when they fail they go to drug shop, which was different from this study whereby most of mothers went to drug shops.
Conclusion: Awareness was good although there were poor awareness on causes and sign/symptoms of disease among mothers and care givers.
