Utilisation of Patient Electronic Medical Records by Public Hospitals Pharmacists at Dar es Salaam City

Abstract:
Background: Electronic Medical Record EMR) is the longitudinal electronic records of patient’s health information generated by one or more encounters in any care delivery system. The system simplify communication between doctors and pharmacists by helping doctors prescribing medicines electronically.
Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the utilization of patient’s electronic medical records by public hospitals pharmacists at Dar es Salaam city.
Methodology: Cross-sectional involving questionnaire by which 101 pharmacists from public hospitals were involved.
Results: Out of 101 pharmacists with mean age of 36±6.6 years, only 36.6% of the pharmacists used EMR. The EMR system was system was mostly used with workers with masters than those with degree of pharmacy, most of the pharmacists used the system in receiving prescription, stock reconciliation and checking correctness of medicines prescribed only 2.7% used the system in allergy documentation. The challenges that they mostly face are electricity problem and network problem. Pharmacists using EMR agreed that the system has simplified the work, increase accuracy in management of data, cost saving, reducing error and improve sharing of information.
Conclusion: The use of EMR in public hospitals is still low only 36.6 of the pharmacists have ever used the system. Pharmacists utilized the EMR system in receiving patient prescription, checking correctness of patient medication and stock reconciliation. The level of service of the hospital has as association with the use EMR system that is a pharmacists working in referral hospitals is very likely to use the system than the one working in district hospital. The main challenges that the pharmacists face are electricity problem and network problem.
Recommendation: The government should make sure that all facilities should adopt the system and implement it effectively, also the government should at least try to solve some of challenges that the pharmacists complain like power fluctuation by making sure that there is immediately back up plan like presence of generators whenever electricity will be a problem.
