NTRODUCTION: Early, efficient and inexpensive methods for detection of pulmonary tuberculosis are urgently needed for effective patient management and to interrupt tuberculosis transmission. These methods to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a timely and affordable way are not yet available in resource-limited settings.
