Summary, etc. This book is intended to be used by physicians, patients, and translational research
scientists as an easy-to-use practical guide when dealing with gastric cardiac
cancer.
Gastric cardiac cancer arises in cardiac mucosa located primarily in the proximal
stomach and occasionally invading into the distal esophagus. In recent years, this
poorly understood cancer has been the focus of intense investigation on mechanisms of pathogenesis, genomic profile, classification, diagnosis, prognosis, staging, and clinical management. As such, a growing body of high-quality evidence has
been accumulated for better clinical management. It is time for a specialized, concise reference on this cancer for clinicians and patients alike.
Because of uncertainty in tumorigenesis mechanisms, there are no universally
accepted clinical practice guidelines on gastric cardiac cancer. The best clinical
management strategy, we believe, is a multidisciplinary approach, including a team
of healthcare subspecialists in gastroenterology, pathology, radiology, abdominal
surgery, thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and palliative care.
The pertinent essential information on gastric cardiac cancer in these medical fields
is included in this book. The manner of presentation of the information in this book
will, we hope, help the reader to quickly master the essential characteristics of this
cancer as described and illustrated with numerous endoscopic, gross, and microscopic photographs, and drawings. We hope this book will facilitate efficient communication and the decision-making process by the multidisciplinary team for
appropriate patient triage and treatment.
A plain, simple language, without medical jargon, is utilized throughout the
book so that patients and their family members and friends may find the materials
presented understandable and useful when they face the challenge of this potentially
fatal cancer.
