Summary, etc. Abstract:<br/><br/>"Background: Antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed and consumed medical remedies world-wide, a global increase in the acquisition and consumption of antibiotics has been well documented. This global increase in the prescription and consumption of antibiotics has been associated with increase in antimicrobial resistance, Data on the prescription patterns of antibiotic is scarce in our settings, and this may impede the efforts of formulating implementable antimicrobial stewardship guidelines based on local evidence. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the antibiotics prescription patterns between tertiary and district hospital pharmacies in Mwanza, Tanzania.<br/><br/>Methodology: A total of 362 patients files were retrieved in this study. A hospital retrospective study was conducted that analysed data on the prescription and indication of antibiotics from patients medical files found in tertiary and district hospitals, data was entered into Microsoft excel for coding and cleaning then analysed using STATA version 15. Data was presented using frequency tables and column charts.<br/><br/>Results: A total of 362 medical files from patients were included in this study with the majority being males (52.2%). The mean age of the patients was 34 (IQR: 18-54) years. Ceftriaxone, ampicillin/cloxacillin and metronidazole were the predominantly prescribed antibiotics, high level of adherence to the Tanzania s STG was observed in this study for both hospitals.<br/><br/>Conclusion: overall both hospitals demonstrated similar trend with ceftriaxone and penicillin’s being commonly prescribed antibiotics for varies indications commonly were septicemia, UTI andpneumonia. Also there was high level of adherence to the Tanzanian STG with regards to antibiotic prescription patterns in which it was higher at BMC compared to Nyamagana.<br/><br/>Key words:  Ceftriaxone, Tanzanias STG, BMC, Nyamagana district hospital<br/><br/>
