Summary, etc. Abstract:

Background: Cancer significantly impacts not only patients but also their caregivers, who provide crucial support throughout the disease process. However, caregivers often experience unmet supportive needs, which can affect their well-being and patient outcomes. Supportive care encompasses physical, emotional, and practical needs across the cancer care continuum, but gaps in these services can leave caregivers vulnerable to various challenges. This study aims to assess the prevalence and factors associated with unmet supportive needs among caregivers of cancer patients at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), a major referral hospital in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August 2024, involving 171 caregivers of cancer patients at BMC. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from validated tools, covering demographic characteristics and various aspects of unmet supportive needs. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression to identify associations between caregiver characteristics and unmet needs.

Results: The study found that 16.4% of caregivers reported unmet supportive needs. Factors such as age were significantly associated with unmet needs, with caregivers aged 20-40 years reporting higher levels. While most caregivers were satisfied with the support received, areas like pain management showed notable unmet needs.

Conclusion: Addressing the gaps in supportive care, particularly in pain management and communication, is crucial for improving caregiver well-being and enhancing patient outcomes. Implementing targeted interventions can better meet caregivers' needs and support them in their critical roles.
