| Summary, etc. | "Abstract:<br/><br/><br/>Background: People with albinism (PWA) are sensitive to the effect of sunlight and prolonged exposure may result to conditions like skin cancer. Sunlight may also cause skin aging and visual difficulties. Sunscreens of high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) ≥30, among other ways like wearing hats, protect them from sunlight. This study aims to determine the knowledge, attitude and practise of PWA towards sunscreen.<br/><br/>Methodology: A cross-sectional study among PWA ≥ 18 years of age from 1st to 28th April 2024 in Ilemela and Nyamagana Districts, Mwanza. After the questionnaire was filled by participants, data was entered and cleaned in Microsoft excel. The cleaned data was analysed in STATA version 15 using descriptive statistics and statistical significance was tested.<br/><br/>Results: From 63 people with albinism of mean age of 28.19 ± 7.6 years, 30(47.6%) were female, 55(87.3%) unemployed. About 89% have ever heard sunscreen and 42(66.7%) had positive attitude on use of sunscreen products. Age (p=0.036) and level of education (p=0.034) were significantly associated with the attitude of PWA towards sunscreen use. Majority of the PWA applied sunscreen occasionally, at specific body parts and do not reapply at day time. Cost of and availability of sunscreen products were among the reasons for the observed practise.<br/><br/>Conclusion: In this study good knowledge was observed and a positive attitude that PWA have on sunscreen use but they still have difficulties on the availability of sunscreen and the high costs associated with the products. More education to PWA, cost adjustment and enhancing availability are the core means to improve the utilization of sunscreen products to people with albinism."<br/> |
