Summary, etc. Abstract:

"Background: Staphylococcus aureus is the most common pathogen which causes pyogenic infection of the skin and soft tissues. Medicinal plants have become popular worldwide with bioactive compounds that have antimicrobial activities and etc. since are less expensive than synthesized drugs and this justifies the frequent use of the neem tree in many countries. However, the potential for higher plants as source for new drugs is still largely unexplored and some are not yet introduced or are rarely used. This study aims to determine in-vitro antibacterial activity of A. indica leaves against S. aureus isolates and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA].

Methods: The study was laboratory based conducted at Multipurpose Laboratory of Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences-Bugando [MPL-CUHAS] in Mwanza which involved samples of S. aureus strains from 3rd to 28th of April,2023.

Results: Trend of increasing antibacterial activity was noted with increasing concentrations of the test extract, Highest percentage of antibacterial activity were shown in 75% concentration and also in 100% concentration. And the antibiotic used (Cefoxitin) was able to produce greater zones of inhibition than neem test extract.

Conclusion: From this study, the data suggest that the neem tree leaves extract exhibits in vitro antibacterial activity against S. aureus strains and MRSA with greatest zones of inhibition was noted at 100% concentration."
